I had not realized I had been away for so long!
Of course, things have been a little busy - this weekend we finished up destroying the basement. We were kind of locked in to doing so, since yesterday the people were coming to jackhammer the perimeter to install the drainage system, and everything had to be 5+ feet away from the walls. This was no mean feat, as both my esteemed spouse and I are pack-rats, and we have lived here a long time. (It is amazing how much shit one can accumulate over time.)
We also decided to destroy the built-in bookcase that was in a corner of the basement area we are going to remodel. We thought about keeping it, but concluded that it just was not to be. Needless to say, that bookcase was the most sturdily built thing in the basement, including the walls! I did get to do some good hammer and crowbar work, and managed to get all the pieces out on my own.
The backing of the bookcase was some sort of black material, which I found out, to my chagrin, was glass. I opted for safety glasses as soon as I discovered this. Good thinking on my part, as some of the glass tiles shattered right in my face. I was itchy as all get out from little shards of glass in my hair and all over me. It was icky.
Yesterday was the trench-digging and today the cement people are coming to cover the trench. Should be pretty cool when all is done.
With luck we will have a livable basement by Thanksgiving!
